Kono School Crisis

Dear friend of Missions,

Just a few years ago we began to build an important school in the remote area of Sierra Leone, West Africa. When Beth and I visited the site in 2004, the pastor of the CinA church in that area announced that the school was to be named after Beth. Beth was a little embarrassed, but thrilled to be honored in such a way. Kono is the name of the district, what we might call the county. (The similarity of the name to my name did not escape our attention!) Kono County is where the infamous diamond mines of Sierra Leone are located. Because of that, the area has taken on a “frontier town” character, similar to frontier towns of yesteryear in our own country. So you can imagine the great needs and the risky lifestyles of many Kono people.

Now that the school building has been completed, we have some shocking news. Here is the letter I received April 14, from our national director, Christian Kallon:

“I pray this finds you well. I am writing to share with you some urgent news regarding damage to the Beth Konold Primary School located in Kono, Sierra Leone.

“Two days ago, we experienced torrential rains in the Kono province which resulted in flooding and other storm related damage. Unfortunately, the roof of the school was blown off of our building and onto a structure in our neighbor’s compound which subsequently collapsed under the weight.

“Thanks be to God that no people were injured. We must begin the process of rebuilding these structures to protect the contents and the buildings themselves from further damage. We estimate the cost to be in the area of $3,000. These monies will allow us to purchase the necessary materials, complete the work, and compensate our neighbor for the damage to his property.

“…Thank you for your prayers as we work diligently to restore the school and our neighbor’s home.”

Kono SchoolAs you can see, we are in need of funds for the Kono Primary School again. I ask that you consider the need and your own financial situation, and then give as generously as you can. So as you contribute to CinA missions this month, I ask that you consider giving an extra amount for the Kono School building repairs. Thank you!

Sincerely yours to reach our world for Jesus,

David Konold, President
