Jeneen shares a message at the CinA
church in Freetown, the Capital.

by Jeneen Roscoe, Missionary
to Sierra Leone, West Africa

Following Brother Samuel and Pastor Goba through some winding clay-colored paths, I ventured with them to the home of a person who had stopped coming to church services. The structure which he called his home was cut into a piece of the mountain, not far from similar structures which others also called home.  Mountains are plenteous in Sierra Leone, even within the capital city of Freetown. As a pot simmered and spewed an aroma into the open air, a man named Prince greeted us with a smile. His activity around the simmering pot let us know that his dinner would soon be ready. Yet still he wanted to hear what we all had come to share—the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Prince's landlord and a young woman who lived nearby ventured near to hear what we had come to share. The young woman was initially distant toward us.  As Prince and his landlord talked with us and we listened attentively, I noticed out of the corner of my eye the young woman drawing nearer and listening in. It was her open door of opportunity to hear the Gospel and she was taking it!

God spoke to the hearts of Prince and his landlord through His Word. The young woman came to me just before we left the area near her home. She said, "I have heard it said of the God you serve that He will come and meet you where you are…that He would even speak through people who travel far distances to come near to where you are. I have seen this for myself now and am convinced to consider this God Whom you serve." The trek was worth it. God used us to plant a seed in her life. Surely our paths will cross again in Sierra Leone, or God may choose to send someone else along to water this planted seed.

This brings to my mind the words in 1 Corinthians 3:7, 8, "So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God Who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor." And Timothy reminds us in 2 Timothy 4:2, 5 to be ready at all times to speak God's Word and fulfill the ministry He has given us to do.

CinA motivates me in missions to move forward as a "doer of the Word" (James 1:22) to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Thank you, CinA, for the open door of opportunity to join with God in His work to see humankind come to know Him personally.

Where is your door of opportunity leading you?

A typical scene near the capital.
