This is the true story of an eight-year-old boy in North Pakistan. In
October 2005 his region was struck by a major earthquake. Thousands died
immediately and tens of thousands became homeless. His family was one of
those who lost their home and as a result spent that winter high up in their
mountain village with only a donated tent for shelter. In early 2006, he
suffered a severe fall and broke his leg in several places. No medical help
was available in this inaccessible area, so his bones weren’t set properly
and he was unable to walk. This condemned him to a dismal life and likely a
premature death in this hostile environment. In April of 2006 Christians in Action sent a team of Christian doctors and nurses from one of our German churches into this mountain region for a medical outreach. Our team was taken high up into the mountains by helicopter to treat people outside the reach of normal help. On the last day of our medical outreach the father of this injured boy carried him down the mountain on his back to our medical clinic. Two surgeons from one of our Christians in Action churches on the team were able to perform surgery in a makeshift operating room set up in a tent and properly set the bones. The result: his present life and his future prospects have been greatly changed. This met his physical needs, but our primary vision is to meet people’s spiritual needs. This story took place in an Islamic area where it isn’t possible to openly present the Gospel. But after this type of medical outreach, we hold a meeting where members of the medical team share their testimonies with those they treated. There is an openness and acceptance for this type of Gospel presentation because the medical outreach moved and opened hearts ahead of time. The following newspaper article shows how this type of outreach is received. |

Article from the National Newspaper of Pakistan: Quake-affected residents of Balakot have appreciated the assistance and sympathy of their Christian brothers who rushed to the area to extend whatever help they could in the hour need. A considerate team visited Balakot and distributed essentially needed relief goods including blankets and edibles. Not only did they distribute relief items in the ruined Garlat area, but they also prayed with tears in their eyes for the devastated families. The team humbly prayed to God to bring back life in the devastated town and make the victims stand on their own feet once again. The leader with his wet eyes prayed to the Almighty to place His own hand on the wounds of the devastated mothers. “Our Christian brothers have won our heart and we cannot forget their gesture of kindness, love and affection in this terrible moment,” said Syed Qaiser Shah, former councilor of Garlat and a social figure of the area. The story of this eight year old boy is admittedly only “a drop in the bucket,” but how important was this outreach for this “one drop”? With perseverance, a bucket can be filled one drop at a time! Therefore, when you are asked to get involved in missions through your prayers and financial support please don’t underestimate the effect your “one drop” can make. Therefore I encourage you to:
