| The “Natural” Leader | |||
| by Barrie McMaster | |||
| President, Christians in Action, Canada | |||

I first noticed him during a church service in Techiman, Ghana. We were
singing and worshiping Jesus. This tall, lean man was obviously taken up in
the worship. “I just love praising God,” he later told me. His name: Jacob
Nangai, now – years later – the new President of Christians in Action-Ghana. There were other ways that Pastor Jacob stood out, aside from his love of the Lord. He had a ready and obvious intellect. He was an excellent translator. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He was patient and articulate in explaining his village, his church, and his pastoral work to us. It struck me that one day he would be a leader, because he already was a ‘natural’ leader. |

My wife, Jan, and I were honored to meet with Jacob and his fiance,
Beatrice, to provide some pre-marital counseling. And by God’s grace, I
would be present in Ghana later for their wedding day. The ceremony was
conducted by CinA International President Emeritus Elgin Taylor, and it was
a service I’ll never forget. After each and every vow, the congregation
cheered and hooted their pleasure. It was a wonderful day! After Rev. Taylor was made a Divisional Chief in Ghana’s Brong Ahafo region (where Christians in Action has an active ministry), he needed a spokesperson, according to custom. Pastor Jacob agreed to take on that role. And in other ways, increasingly, Jacob’s ‘natural’ leadership became more and more apparent to his peers and his associates. The challenges of national leadership are many, especially for a village-based set of churches and pastors. Pastor Jacob Nangai, a man who loves to worship, a man with leadership gifts, is a natural choice to guide this work into the future. We always remember him in prayer. |
