A Taste of Hell

  by Ruth Powers,
  Missionary to Brazil

"I watch the young men and women on our team playing soccer, doing acrobatics and interacting with some of the children that are here today. The girls are painting the kids' faces with toys or flowers. Yesterday we went to a hotel, eight stories high, to talk to the prostitutes that fill the place. The whole building is only for that use and it gives one a taste of hell to go inside. It is dirty and very ugly. There is a rickety old elevator that goes all the way up and a stairway all the way up as well. Sitting on the stairwell are the girls, just young ladies, trying to get their customers. Dozens of men are going up and down the stairs making their choices. I just keep thinking that these girls are someone's daughters. Among the girls we met was a preacher's daughter who, in trying to spite her father, went into prostitution. We then went to the park where the older prostitutes did their work. They were all over the place, most either extremely thin or extremely heavy, some looking very sick. The need is so great that we barely scratched the surface.

"One day about 100 kids showed up to spend the day with us. Many were sons and daughters of the prostitutes in the area.  They stayed for eight hours and were full of energy the entire time! Our team played with them all day and hugged them and held them. One little girl was ganged up on by a bunch of kids and Cristine, one of our missionary students, rescued her. Later the little girl was sound asleep in Cristine's arms. She stayed there for a long time. I can't explain to you what happened inside of me when I saw that. My heart just got so full seeing everything that was going on around me. Some of the young people had to go hide during our time there and cry because they couldn't take the suffering all around them.

"One man had been run over by a car and had developed a bad infection in his leg. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Cristine had prayed with him to receive the Lord. We were pleasantly surprised when, the next day, he came back and told her he was going to a recuperation center for further help. We were all aware that we needed to be realistic and not expect too much, but we still had hope that these folks would meet the Lord in a real way and let the Lord change their lives. Many did pray with us to receive the Lord, among them about 40 kids.

"All we can do is ask you to pray for this ministry in Sao Paulo and our ongoing involvement there. We plan to continue sending our missionary students there for on-the-job training, and expect to receive people from the Sao Paulo ministry center (with whom they conducted this outreach) for Bible training at our school in Porto Alegre."
