| In 1997, Brazilian CinA missionaries, Jorge and Véra Feistler, fulfilled a long-term dream by opening a new ministry for CinA in the country of Guinea-Bissau. The work was very arduous and difficult and they returned home to Brazil after one year on the field. However, the Lord kept Guinea-Bissau on their hearts. In the year 2001, God spoke to another couple on the CinA Brazil team, Freddie Shafer, and his wife, Raquel. As Jorge had done earlier, they began to plan and pray toward Guinea-Bissau. This time several other Brazilians pledged to join the missionary team, including Jorge and Vera. In order to train properly for a West African culture, they joined hands with the CinA ministry in Cartagena, Colombia, resulting in a transcultural missionary course being established in an African/Indian village called Palenque, located 50 miles inland from Cartagena. Three Colombians and six Brazilians trained in that small village for nearly one year, preparing themselves for the rigors of remote living in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. By 2002, nine missionary team members and their families had raised support and were farewelled to the new mission field location. They chose to minister in a town called Quebo, a five hour drive from the capital city of Bissau. Under very primitive conditions with no electricity or running water, the team began to set up a medical clinic and a school, first grade through eleventh grade. As they worked in those two capacities, many people accepted Christ and were baptized in the river nearby. After 18 months of ministry, the team divided to open a new ministry in the nearby village called Eimberem. One of the official languages of Guinea Bissau is Portuguese, so the Brazilians were able to be effective in ministry almost immediately. The towns are essentially 100% Muslim by religion but these Christian missionaries have been welcomed and because of that, the two towns are being blessed by the Lord. | ||
